English Institute Application

The English Institute for International Students (EIIS) offers intensive courses in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language. Five eight-week courses are offered each year. The primary objective of the institute is to provide international students with a sufficient command of English to function on a level comparable to their American classmates and to provide intensive language training to those who wish to improve their English. All applicants must be secondary school graduates. Admission to the EIIS in no way guarantees admission to The University of Tulsa.

You may contact the English Institute at 918-631-2535.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

EIIS is organized into five levels of study: Basic, Intermediate I and II, and Advanced I and II. Entering students are placed in the appropriate level based on the results of a placement test developed specifically for this purpose. Tests are given at the conclusion of each level to assist in measuring language skill progress and proficiency.

Classes meet Monday through Friday each week, and daily classes include instruction in the functional areas of reading, writing, oral skills, grammar, vocabulary, and listening. Computer-assisted instruction is used extensively throughout the curriculum. In addition to regular classes, students have access to an on-campus language laboratory where they can practice listening and pronunciation and work on computerized grammar and vocabulary programs.

Upon completion of EIIS, students who have admission to The University of Tulsa can fulfill the university language proficiency requirement by passing a proficiency test developed for this purpose. University-admitted students in level five may enroll in one university class while studying at EIIS.
