University of Tulsa :: Tulsa, OK :: 16-20 June, 2003

Vivian Mercier coined the term "the Joyce industry" when he first encountered American critics' intense fascination with the Irish author and his work. For the past forty years, the James Joyce Quarterly has been at the center of this industry, disseminating scholarly work to a large and diverse audience of readers. This year's conference will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the JJQ by looking back on how this industry has taken shape, and looking forward to where it might be headed.

Conference Highlights Include:

  • A roundtable discussion of the past, present, and future of the James Joyce Quarterly with Thomas F. Staley, Robert Spoo, and Sean Latham
  • Keynote addresses by Shari Benstock, Karen Lawrence, and Robert Scholes
  • A gala Bloomsday banquet at the Philbrook Museum
  • "In Good Company," a major exhibition of the Joyce materials held by the McFarlin Library at the University of Tulsa curated by Lori Curtis, Luca Crispi, and Stacey Herbert
  • An exhibition highlighting the history of the JJQ
  • A wide array of tours and cultural events including trips to the Gilcrease Museum, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Price Tower, and the OK Mozart festival
  • The usual round of receptions and parties offering a chance to meet Joyceans old and new
