Chapter Report

                                                                      YR 00-01

The University of Oklahoma’s NALSA chapter has had a very successful year.  We usually have bi-weekly meetings where we discuss current issues affecting the legal arena and more specifically Indian law.  We also continued our speaker series for our members.  We bring in a couple of speakers a semester to talk about different aspects of Indian law.  The NALSA group also participated in other activities.

This were we were honored to have the Area Representative for the National Native American Law Student Association as apart of our group this year.  Mr.  David Gover did a fine job representing NNALSA and the University of Oklahoma.  Among his activities this year, he visited the University of Tulsa Law School and attended the NNALSA mid-year meeting in Connecticut..

This year we have really focused on working with other minority groups on campus to increase the number of minority students attending law school.  We have started working with the Undergraduate Pre-law Society on campus in order to help them gain a better understanding of gaining entry into  law school.  We are also working with the Black Law Student Association, the Asian Pacific Law Student Association, and the Hispanic Law Student Association on a minority recruitment at the OU School of Law.  It is scheduled for March 31, 2001.  We have invited students from colleges throughout Oklahoma and North Texas for a presentation on taking the LSAT, a typical law school class, and the admissions process.  We will also have current students and alumni on hand to answer any questions that prospective students may have.

We have had two fund raising activities this year.  In the fall we worked with the Black Law Student Association on a joint fund raiser.  We will also be having our annual fundraiser in April.  We host a night showcasing Native culture.  We provide Indian tacos, entertainment presenting different forms fo Indian culture, and then ending the night with a speaker discussing an aspect of Indian law.

In summation I feel that the NALSA group had the University of Oklahoma had a very productive year.  We have helped renew the efforts to diversify the legal world and hope next year’s group will continue to carry on our efforts.
