Hispanic Law Students Association
Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, February 12, 2002
We had a big turnout ;-) Glad to see all the shining faces!
We discussed the following:
BUDGET
· The SBA allocated $0.00 (not a typo) to the HLSA for the Spring semester. HLSA is responsible for all fundraising this semester. Next Fall should be a different story!
·
The Hispanic Nat'l Bar Assn is sending a packet for us to sign up to be charter
member of the Law Student Division. I will find out what benefits come
with charter membership ($?).
CURRENT HLSA OFFICERS (elections next Wed 2/20/02 @ noon in 205)
Current President - Kathy Jarmiolowski
Vice President - Vacant*
Treasurer - Vacant* (Jessica Monachello would like to run)
Secretary - Vacant* (Michelle Perez would like to run)
·
The SBA is requiring that HLSA at least officers in place in order to get
recognition as a legitimate organization (budget allocations for next semester).
So if anyone else is interested in running for a position, please let me know
and attend the meeting next Wed.
FUTURE PROGRAMS/EVENTS
· Wednesday Luncheon & Speaker - We agreed to ask local attorneys to come speak to students (open to all student body) at least once a month on Wed. Wednesday seems to be a good day when many students are around. I spoke with my mentor* who a TU alum and specializes in Telecommunications Law who agreed to come. We just need a date.
· If anyone knows any attorneys who would be willing to come speak, please email me their names, a Wednesday they are available and topic(s). Also, I agreed to speak with the TU alumni office to get the names of additional people in the community.
*The TU alumni office can get you a mentor. Go by and sign up today.
· Thursday Happy Hour - We agreed that it would be a good idea to have a Thursday afternoon monthly mixer for the students. I am going to contact (if anyone wants to help, let me know) other organizations who would be willing to join. I have not called a beer distributor to see if they would be willing to donate beer "for a good cause." If someone knows anyone in the biz and would be willing to call, great. But I will still make the calls until then.
· Community Involvement - We discussed the importance of doing something for the community. A couple of ideas suggested were tutoring at a local high school and volunteering for the Salvation Army. Nothing was decided.
·
Fundraisers - We agreed that we need to raise money for the organization.
Not only will we have money in the coffers but we can have fun doing it.
We suggested having a Salsa Lessons Night sometime in late March, after Spring
Break. Jessica is making calls. Rich gave me a couple of numbers.
We will first see if we can get a Salsa instructor to donate his/her talents,
before we go any further. Should know by next Wednesday. We need
to discuss location (TU, local restaurant, suggestions?).
