Hispanic Law Students Association

Meeting Minutes for

Wednesday, February 20, 2002

The following items were discussed:
  1. Officer elections were held.  The current officers are as listed:
  2. Future Programs/Events
    1. Luncheon/Speaker – Wednesday, March 6th in Moot Court Room
Speaker: Debra Stockton, Senior Counsel, AFN Communications
      Topic: Telecom
Other:  Awaiting confirmation from Ms. Stockton
    2. Thursday Happy Hour
We decided that having all the clubs meet at a bar on a specific night would be fun.  The tentative date is: March 21 (the week after Spring Break).  Proposed site for beverage consumption:  Slow Duck on Cherry St.  Flori Nunez (SBA, Delta Theta Phi), Bruce Gordon (Indian Law Society) & Kathy Jarmiolowski  (BLSA, Environmental Law, etc.) agreed to contact other student organizations.
    3. Community Involvement
      1. Adopt a School - We decided to try to adopt an elementary school.  Bruce agreed to contact Kendall Whittier Elementary to see what can be arranged.  Since our schedules are tight, we agreed that it would be best if each member picks one day during the week to tutor for 1 hour.
      2. We agreed to talk with Public Interest Law Society (PISA?) about helping out with Habitat for Humanity.  Kathy will put a note in their drop folder about our interest.
    4. Fundraisers
      1. Salsa Lessons
Rich Badillo agreed to call dance instructors.  The event would be held in one of the smaller room in ACAC.
      2. On campus mixer w/ alumni/local attys and Rep. Sullivan - Waiting to hear from Rep Sullivan’s office to see what his schedule is like.
Called Budweiser for keg donations. This is a no-can do.  Apparently, any alcohol brought onto campus must be purchased from TU.  So keg donations are not an option for this.  Kathy agreed to call OK licensing bureau to determine whether we could have a party at a city park.
But we could still have this as one of the Luncheon Speakers.
      3. Sports Fest/Tournament  -  6 people per team @ $50/each?  We brainstormed about when and agreed to have an end of the year sports tournament for everyone.
Games:  Undecided (ideas:  softball, kickball, flag football, Frisbee, etc.)
Date: 2 weeks or the last week before finals?
Other:  This is still in discussion!
      4. Worst Teacher Contest
We discussed having a table out in the pit area for students/teachers to vote for the worst teacher.  Should be all in good humor.  Bruce said it has been done before successfully.
Date:  Probably around finals to let off some frustration?
  3. Other Business
