Scope and Contents note

Manuscript, correspondence, photographs, original sketches, and maps of Ferdinand Huszti Horvath, who served in the Austro-Hungarian army. The manuscripts consist of Horvath's draft for the publication of his memoir "Captured!" in which he describes his capture and internment by Russians, and his eventual escape.

Constructed of tan-colored heavy stiff boards with cotton string ties. Originally housed the chapter manuscripts for Horvath's memoir. "Ferdinand Huszti Horvath. New York Cy. 365 Manhattan Ave" is handwritten in pencil on the front board. Boards measure 16.6 x 23.7 cm.

Lt. Ferdinand Horvath to Frau Martha Jekel, wife of a fellow prisoner of war with whom Horvath had planned an escape through Finland. Although Frau Jekel's husband was still missing, he told her that he (Horvath) still intended to escape. He also described to her the meetings he and her husband had from 1917 December 23 onwards.

The correspondent also suggests that, after Horvath's ordeal (i.e. as prisoner of war), he should apply (i.e. to a sanitarium)]. Written from Baden.

 1000.073.1.24 Manuscript notebook 1915   20.5 x 18.1 cm Manuscript notebook with one signature of plain paper sewn on to light-weight boards. "Komp. Kommando. Befehle" is handwritten in blue and red pencil in large bold letters on front cover. "K.u.k. 1. Reg. d. Trolier Kaiser-Jager" is written in ink in normal cursive on the front cover. "Ltn. Ferdinand Horvath" is written in pencil inside the front cover. 8 pages contain text, 24 pages remain blank.

Scope and Contents note

Documentation of orders given by Lt. Ferdinand Horvath, Company Commander, 12th Field Company, 1st Regiment, Tiroler Kaiser-Jaeger, between 1915 May 26 and 1915 June 1. Includes sketches and diagrams of troop placements.

Laid in are 3 small sheets of text, printed in block letters and signed by Horvath, on golden-yellow onion skin paper, on which he describes the abysmal treatment of his unit including in depth account of the unsanitary conditions.

Postcards have been removed and housed separately from the board (now located in oversized box 1000.073.1.2). Expanatory captions are typed out on a small scrap of paper. Board measures 38 x 29 cm. Photo-postcards measure 14 x 8.8 cm; oientation varies.

 1000.073.3.4 Photograph Undated   37.3 x 48 cm B/W photograph, mounted. 3/4's of the original matting is missing, with only the top portion bearing the company name and number remaining. Upper and lower corners are broken. Individuals pictured in the first row of the group photo have been obliterated by wear.

Scope and Contents note

Professional group photograph, taken outdoors, of the 28 Imperial-Royal Tyrolean Rifle Regiment, 2 Company, consisting of approximately 150 or more uniformed individuals, many of whom are pictured with rifles and bayonets. An arrow, drawn with blue ink, points to a man pictured centrally in the second row from the front, most likely Horvath himself.
