Personal ephemera

1989.003.1.13 Cigarette lighter Undated   5.1 x 4.1 x .8 cm Brass and silver-toned cigarette lighter designed to look like a book, engraved with Appel's initials (SA).

Scope and Contents note

Regarding the cigarette lighter, Norma Rubovits, Appel's neice, relays the following:

During World War I, Sally Appel served as both interpreter and censor in a prisoner of war camp. One day, in the line of duty, he called for a French soldier to come to his office. He showed the soldier two letters and asked if he had written them. After the soldier's affirmative reply, Sally asked him to look at them and see if that is how he wanted them sent. The soldier became flustered and upset. Sally told him to fix the letters how he wanted them. So, the soldier quickly switched the envelopes. He had written a letter to his mistress and put it in the envelope addressed to his wife, and the letter he wrote to his wife was in the envelope addressed to his mistress. The soldier's gratitude was overwhelming. He could not thank Sally enough.

Some weeks later the soldier came to the censorship office and presented Sally Appel with a miniature book encasing a cigarette lighter. He had fashioned this astonishing artifact out of spent shells and bullets in the prison camp workshop. He obviously was a very skilled craftsman with a keen eye. The book is fashioned with outstanding bands on the spine, Sally's monogram on the front board, and a delicate diaper pattern on front and backboards. To open the lighter one only needs to pull the spine gently from the top.
