Scope and Contents note

Diary of Sgt. Louis Vogel, US Army, with entries about his experiences beginning from his departure from Camp Doniphan, Oklahoma in May of 1918 through his service in France near the Front, and up to his return to the US in May of 1919. The diary entries actually begin on the pages for May and continue through December, then resume on the pages for January (1919).

PLEASE NOTE: It is not always clear where entries begin and end as they often continue through many dates as one long entry. Vogel writes with little to no punctuation and consistently uses irregular spelling; Vogel's writing has been edited so that the transcription does not reflect these irregularities.

Included with the diary is an order of service for a Passover Seder service sponsored by the Jewish Welfare Board.

1 p.m. Pulled out as a freighter passed Sandy Hook and we went on deck. The first 3 days weather good. Had lots of guard [duty] and got little sleep. Grub poor and the men sure did kick. I read a little and wrote a lot and more guard [duty] on a sub guard. No lights and hard to find my men. One night on my watch, I noticed sparks firing from side of ship. Next night same time I noticed some sparks at different intervals and could not make out what they were. Made a report of same. The nights were getting cold and rain, fog.

Had two bands on the boat and lots of boat drill. Took a salt bath and wash clothes. Eats still bum. Sea rough. Did not get sea sick, just tired and sleepy. On guard all the time and everybody ran out of chewing [tobacco]. At 4 p.m. a sub was sighted so we changed our course to south. More guard and ship drill. Sleep with all my clothes. Never took my shoes off for 7 days now and always wore my life preserver. Picked up 20 English sub chasers and we felt a lot safer. They were all around us. At day break we saw land. At 3 p.m. a sub got in the convoy and fired but missed. One of our ships got the sub. Got to dock in Liverpool. Allowed off. Slept in dock that night.

Got off and marched thru Liverpool and got on a train and road all afternoon. Arrived in Ramsey at midnight. A long hike to Camp Woodly. Damn little to eat and hike every day. Wrote some letters home. Sent lots of cards of England. Went to Ramsey with Dick and had tea in a tea room. All went swimming in the river. Went to the Y.M.C.A. and seen an English entertainment. It did not get dark until about 10:30. In fact at taps 10 p.m. it was still light enough to read a newspaper. The country was beautiful and the time spent there we all enjoyed. Seen the old abby nearly 1000 years old. Slept in pup tent all the time. Getting used to the English ways. We left camp and hiked to S. Hampton, [17] miles, with full pack. Boot sour.

Wednesday - Sunday 1918 June 12-30

Scope and Contents note

We had clean up days and drill a lot getting in shape. The first day in [p---] came around. Took baths in a big pool. Very little to eat and no smoking or chewing. We sold Bull Durham for 1fr. a sack. The weather was good and we soon got in very good shape. Met lots of French people and my first French lesson. Went out at night, walking around with a book, talking with its aid. McKay in charge so I shaved every morning. Part of the F.A. [field artillery] were in with us. They did not stay long. Wrote a lot. Weather was nice and hardly no rain. Most of the boys got zig-zag every night and lots of na-na. Took long walks on Sunday mornings and in all my time spent there was very pleasant, although I had to sleep on a long box not more than 18 in. wide. Our stables were near big slate mines and watched them work them after.

Thursday. Moved to Pyramide only a little way from old home. Have a regular house to live in and our kitchen outside. Lots of drill there and already know most of the people. Met some Jewish men and get along fine. Learning French. Most of the boys were broke so of course stayed good. Old Dad had to have his so he gave tobacco for his. We got our trench mortars and started our drill on the guns. Had lots of road marches. Winters went to gas school for 1 week. At nights most of us went out and made lots of friends among the French. One day I was driving my Squad and got thirsty. Had no water with me so stopped and asked an old man for some [do-lo]. He took me back and down his cellar and fills up my canteen full of cider. Food stuff was awful high and they had no white bread or tobacco and when the boys [want] some vin, they would go out and give some of their salt away. The girls would bring us flowers and stayed to talk.

Monday - Wednesday 1918 July 15-31

Scope and Contents note

Started to drill and went out to dig trenches. The first day out I was called back to go to gas school. Left one Friday and 5 of us from camp got 2d class and rode three [---] and got to [Longnes]. Trucks took us to the school. the trip was great and the course was hard working day and night. Drill, lecture, 2 times a day and maneuvers at night. It lasted 7 days and had a great time going back. Found a [---] and got back in camp 10 days from day I left. The battery was having school of fire. I went right to work. Took charge of the gas work and also went ahead with my school of fire. Out to the trenches every day. Sometimes slept out there in pup tents. The weather was awful all the time. Rain and mud. Read a little of books I got at Y.M.C.A. there and wrote a lot. Got my first pay in France there and after paying all I owed, I still had beaucoup francs. The school of fire was a success and we had a gen. inspection and were told we are fit to go up and give them hell. We had more drill on our guns and I was in charge of the gas work and also gunner. Had lots of bayonet work. At night I went on the [---] sometimes. It was there we first seen [Armenians] and [Algerians]. The Captain and [Degan] came back to us and McKay left us for the Front. I rec. a lot of mail there and generally was in very good spirits. Had reveille every morning and retired at night with gas drill and helmets. Always wore our helmets and gas masks out the trenches. Wore our gas masks 1 hour every day. Even Sundays.

When one of our guns in school of fire had an abnormal shot and hit about 50 feet in front of our observation dugout which I was in and ws my first experience of a shell falling near me. Left camp, 12 men on truck, loaded to the top. Stopped at dark and camped in pup tents [started on my end]. Got up at 5 a.m. Weather good. The country people brought us milk. Ate dinner at E.B. Stopped in Pyramide 20 min. The people sure was glad to see us. On way to Tours via Sauer, took the [farmers] drive along the [Loire] River and stopped one day at 11 a.m. so everybody could take a swim. And we sure did. It was real warm and disty. We stopped often for short rests. Rode two horses and rested 15 minutes. Picked lots of blackberries on our short stops. The girls, in fact all the people were sure glad to meet us, being the first troops to go that was in trucks. After, stopped in small towns where the girls would bring us flowers. Just outside, at Lucy, truck overturned and hurt 5 men, one dying some time later. Stopped in Dijon-Is-sur-Tille and then to [Longnes[. [-------]. Went [thru Longnes]. Was there before when I went to gas school. Rode on to the Vosges mountains - up one and down another - being the most wonderful country I have ever seen.
