Collection Inventory

 2011.003.1 Photo album 1 1917-1919   1 photo album containing 130 photographs and 20 stamps. Album measures 28.5 x 23.5 x 4 cm. Images range in size from 9 x 6.5 to 16.1 x 20.9 cm; orientation varies. Black faux-leather, post-bound photo album with 51 black paper pages. "Photographs" gold-stamped on upper left of front cover. Snapshots are pasted and/or taped directly onto pages. Most images have been captioned in white pencil, although much of the text is faded. Small doodles and sketches, drawn with white pencil in the margins, are scattered throughout. 34 pages contain photographs, 15 pages are blank, and the last 2 pages contain stamps. There are indications that 2 or 3 photos were removed or lost from the album prior to acquisition.

Images include:

870 Air Squadron present executive staff, class group photos.

Arrival by train.

Classmates, pictured individually and in small groups engages in a variety of activities.

Recruit camp, tents and kitchens, field manuevers.

133 Aero Squadron.

San Antonio, New Brunsfield, the Alamo, San Antonio River, San Pedro Park, San Juan Mission, Breckenridge Park, and other local sites as well as snapshots of local civilians.

Barracks, air hangers, aeroplanes on the field, aeroplane engines and engine tests.

Views from the air of aeroplanes (mono, bi and triplanes), in flight and in formation.

Views of the remains of aeroplanes following plane crashes.

Tarantula, cactus, cotton fields near Kelly Field, dust devils and dust storms.

Recruits for the army, preparations for leaving Kelly Field by train; scenes along the way, the trip ending in California.

Souvenir stamps featuring various scenes of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

 2011.003.2 Photo album 2 1917-1919   1 photo album Album measures 14 x 24 x .8. Images range in size from 4.7 x 4.8 to 9.6 x 15.4 cm. Sepia-toned snapshots pasted into a black, paper-cover album with 15 black pages. A.S.M.S. Kelly Field gold-stamped on cover, other text has since faded.

Scope and Contents note

Album contains 26 snapshots (as seen from ground level and from the air) on 14 pages. Images include:

Kelly Field Headquarterss, school grounds and surrounding infrastructure, airfields, men on field maneuvers, aeroplanes on the ground and in flight, the Alamo, and an observation balloon in air with biplanes.

Page 15, the last page of the album, is blank.

"Remembering Our Servicemen....Williamette National Sets Memorial Rites." Article with photos regarding the Williamette National Cemetery located on the slopes of Mount Scott in Portland, Oregon. Handwritten note at the top of the cutting reads: "Read. Important instructions for lots in Verterans Williamette National Cemetery."

On verso are other clippings pasted on, including: "House Accepts Senate Vets Pension Boosts", and "Widowhood: Loss of mate Poses Need for Legal Aid."
