Biographical/Historical note

Amos V. Todd was a Tulsa native, who enlisted 1 May 1917 as a member of the Tulsa (or Oklahoma) Ambulance Co. Company, which formed the basis of the Ambulance Co. 167, attached to the 117th Sanitary Train, 42d (Rainbow) Division, AEF.

After the war he served as an office manager at Guston-Bacon manufacturing Co, then as an Insurance agent and manager for both the Prudential Life Insurance Company, and the American National Insurance Co., before entering the field of real estate.

He married Bessie Holmes, and they had two children: Donald Grimes Todd, and Robert Virgil Todd.

 1992.007.1 Photographic reproduction of the officers and crew of the US Transport Mount Vernon. 1919   19 x 57 cm.

Biographical/Historical note

The German Norddeutscher Lloyd liner Kronprinzessin Cecilie was built in 1906. She was seized in April 1917 and outfitted as troopship by the U.S. Navy, and comissioned USS Mount Vernon (ID 4508), 28 July 1917. On 5 September 1918, she was torpedoed by U-82 and nearly sunk, finally limping home. In April 1917, she was returned to service, and in that month served to bring 3 units of the 117 Sanitary Train back to the US, including the 167th (Oklahoma) co. The Mount Vernon was decommissioned 29 September 1919 and transferred to the War Department for service as an Army transport. She was scrapped in September 1940 in Baltimore.
