User Interface (UI)

Datatel User Interface (UI) is the point-and-click interface to the Datatel systems. It is available in a desktop version for PC's running Microsoft Windows, and a web version for all platforms.

For security reasons, the TU Virtual Private Network (VPN) software must be running on your computer in order to access Datatel from off-campus. The VPN software is available for download from the Software Downloads page (TU login required).

UI Desktop

UI Desktop is the Datatel client software that can be installed on a PC running Microsoft Windows. It is the preferred method for accessing the Datatel systems from a TU-owned computer connected to the campus network.

To have UI Desktop installed on a TU-owned computer, contact the IS Help Desk or your College/Departmental system administrator.

If you need to install UI Desktop on a personally-owned computer, contact the IS Help Desk to check out an installation CD. You must also run the TU VPN software in order to access the Datatel systems from off campus.

UI Web

In addition to the UI desktop client for Windows, a web-based version is now available for all platforms, including Mac and Linux. This version of UI runs in your web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari. Of particular interest to many users is that UI Web provides screen print capability using your browser's print button. For security reasons, you must run the TU VPN software to access UI Web from off-campus.

You can log into UI Web at this address:  http://uiweb.utulsa.edu

Access to UI Web is provided by request only... simply submit the online UI Web Access Request Form, and the Datatel Support Team will get you set up.

Please note: UI Web requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5 or higher to be installed on your machine (Macintosh users must have version 1.4.2_12 or higher). Most people already have JRE installed, so please do not contact the IS Help Desk or your system administrator about it prior to requesting access. If you sign up for access and then have difficulty getting into the web page, that's when to call for help.

The current version of UI Web has a minor bug in the IBM server software component, resulting in two incorrect security warnings. These warnings are the result of a software bug and are NOT a security problem. Please see this illustrated document for more information.

User's Guide

A user's guide, titled "Using Datatel User Interface" was installed on your desktop computer when Datatel Terminal and UI Desktop were installed. Click your Windows "Start" menu, then All Programs -> Datatel -> Using Datatel User Interface.

UI Web users -- an Adobe pdf copy of the users' guide can be provided upon request. Send an email request to datatel-support@utulsa.edu.

FAQ

How do I get UI installed?

Contact the support group or person who manages your computer. This would be the Help Desk, your College system administration group, or your departmental system administrator. If you manage your own computer, contact datatel-support@utulsa.edu for instructions on downloading and installing the software.

How do I get access to UI Web?

Complete the online UI Web Access Request Form, and the Datatel Support Team will get you set up.

How do I screen print?

UI does not have a screen print function. You need to use the built-in Windows screen capture function (alt-printscreen), paste the image into Word, then print. An illustrated document is available.

As an alternative, a variety of commercial and shareware programs are available to perform screen capture and printing in Microsoft Windows. Installation of such a program will require the involvement of the support group or person who manages your computer (Help Desk, College System Administrators, Departmental System Administrators). Information Services can not provide support for any screen capture program, but we can suggest a free one: PrintKey 2000 by Alfred Bolinger. So far, all feedback on this program has been positive. It is available for download in the Software Downloads page (TU login required). On a University-owned computer, contact the Help Desk or your system administrator for installation.

How do I add another database in UI?

If you have the Colleague (or Benefactor) database available on your computer, but need to use another database, here's what to do:
