Disk Space

Utulsa Home

The University of Tulsa provides each student, faculty, and staff (those that have a campus user name) 3GB of personal disk space on a campus server. Benefits of using this personal space is that it is available to you all around campus as well as off-campus. Also, your files are automatically backed up for disaster recovery purposes. To access your personal space, you must know your user name and the password associated with your user name.

Your personal space offers several features:

  • Network connection to your computer
  • File backup
  • Personal web site with cgi-bin capability
  • Terminal access to run programs on the server

Filer is the system used to provide your Utulsa Home file space. This space is yours to access. You may use this space to place original as well as archived documents. No one else can access your file space. Use your home directory in whatever way is most useful to you, but the university cannot allow the illegal storage of materials here.

Home and shared directories are hosted on a high-performance high-availability Network Appliance 840 Filer, sporting redundant gigabit connections to the core routers, a terabyte of on-line storage, snapshots for simple copy and paste data recovery, and nightly off-line backups for disaster recovery. In short, if you've got important data you'd like to access from anywhere on campus (or off) this is the place to put it! Utulsa Home is your home directory. This is the same one used to serve your personal web page at www.personal.utulsa.edu/~user-name from the public_html subdirectory. It's also the same one used when you ssh to your unix account at login.utulsa.edu.

How to Use the Filer

How you access the filer depends on which operating system you are using and whether you login the the UTULSA windows domain or not. If you are running Windows NT, 2000, or XP and you login to the UTULSA windows domain, you should see a "Utulsa Home" and "Shared Space" icon on your desktop after you login (simply double click on either to access the filer).

Otherwise, follow the appropriate steps below:

Window filer connect:

If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP and not connected to the Utulsa Domain and you do not have drive W: mapped to "your user name on filer" then you may wish to map the drive for convenience. If you have the drive mapped, then you can more easily find it when saving from Office Products.

Steps

Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop or in your start menu. This should bring up a menu that looks like the on to the right.

In Folder: type in "\\filer\user-name" (where user-name is your Utulsa user name) and click on Finish.

Map Network Drive

If this gives you an error like "The network path \\filer\john-doe could not be found" then try substituting filer.utulsa.edu for filer, i.e. - \\filer.utulsa.edu\john-doe.

After a few moments, the screen to the right should pop up, asking for your username and password.

User name: - type "utulsa\user-name" (substitute your Utulsa user name in place of user-name)

Password: - type your Utulsa password (it is the same as your Utulsa email password). Click on OK to finish.

Upon success, you can access Utulsa Home through My Computer, Windows Explorer, etc. just like you access your other drives like C:.

Mac filer connect

Steps

In the Finder Click on the "Go" menu at the top of the screen, choose the "Connect to Server. . ." item.

In the "Address" type "smb://filer/user-name" (without the quotes, and substitute your username for the user-name) and click on the "Connect" button.

Fill the menu in with the following information and then click OK.

  • Workgroup/Domain enter UTULSA
  • Username enter your campus user name
  • Password enter your campus password

With success, you should see an icon with your username on your desktop. You may use this as your would any normal Mac storage device.    Repeat this procedure at login.

Access Filer/Utulsa Home with WinSCP:

WinSCP is the a Windows implementation of the UNIX secure copy protocol that is being used to replace FTP on the campus servers in an effort to enhance the security of the system. With WinSCP, you can transfer files between your local machine and a desired server that is running SSH. You may also use WinSCP to set file permissions on your campus Utulsa Home area.

Download WinSCP from the myTU Essentials box on the IT homepage.

Log in to Utulsa Home with WinSCP:

Once you have installed WinSCP, you can double click on the application to start it. You will be presented with a WinSCP login screen. You must enter in the host name of the computer you wish to connect to (in this case "login.utulsa.edu"), your campus user name and your password.

You can then click on the "Login" button at the bottom of the window to log into your account.

Transfer Files Between Machines

Once you have successfully logged into your account you will see a window come up with two sides represented. On the left hand side will be your computer's files and on the right hand side will be the files on your account. To copy files, you can just drag the files/folders from one side to the other.

Set My File Permissions

The properties (F9 key) window will let you control the permissions on your personal file space. Since the personal files space is hosted on a multi-user system each person has an account with certain permissions set to define what other users can see/read, save/write, and execute.

In order to change the permissions you have to select the files/folders you want to change, and go to the properties button at the bottom of the window (or hit the F9 button).

In the owner option, fill in your correct user name. It will most likely be the first part of your user name.

From here, use your mouse to click on/off the check marks next to the permissions you wish to change. When setting the permissions to on, double click the box so that the check mark becomes black and not just grey. For example, the window on the right shows that the permissions are set such that the owner has full control of this file (R,W,X all have check marks next to them), Groups can only read the file (R only has a check mark), and Others can only read the file.

For your personal web space to work, you will want to change the permissions for public html to the following before you transfer files to this area.

  • Owner – RWX
  • Group – RX
  • Others - RX

Other connection options:

  • WinSCP (found on the myTU Essentials box on the IT homepage.)
  • Website Editor that can access through the network or scp/sftp protocol
  • SSH Terminal Window (i.e. PuTTY found on myTU Essentials box on the IT homepage.)

Note: Due to restrictions within the Windows XP Home Product, access to some services restricted.

General Server Information:

  • Server Name: login.utulsa.edu
  • Login: your campus user name and password

  • Personal Web Directory: /users/first_initial_of_username/username/public_html/
  • Personal Web Location: http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~username/
