Do I have to have to buy a permit in order to park?

All vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, etc.) must be registered with the University. Every student and employee must register his or her vehicle(s) that will be parked on the TU campus, including University streets.

Where can I park? In just one lot or anywhere on campus?

All parking permits will be lot specific. When TU students or employees register their vehicles, the parking office will assign a permit for a specific lot. Those vehicles with ADA permits may park in any ADA-designated space on campus. Registered motorcycles, mopeds, or motorized scooters will be eligible to park in any campus parking lot (except premium lots) in the designated motorcycle parking areas.

What about parking for campus residents?

The needs of campus residents will be met by allocating parking spaces for them in residential and dual purpose lots, which allow parking for both residents and nonresidents. Following the campus resident selection period, any excess parking capacity in dual purpose lots would be made available to other campus groups.

I am a parent/campus visitor/volunteer. What should I do about parking on campus?

TU welcomes parents, visitors, and volunteers to campus. Visitor parking has been established at strategic locations on campus. If a bona fide visitor receives a traffic citation for not having a parking permit, the visitor should sign the citation and drop it in any mailbox so the records can be verified and cleared. Citations issued to registered vehicles (vehicles with parking permits) cannot be signed as a visitor

What are the differences between a resident and a nonresident?

Resident permits will be assigned only to students who live in on-campus housing, including fraternities and sororities. Nonresidents are those employees and students who do not reside in on-campus housing.

Why are permits for campus residents cheaper than for nonresidents? And why are the premium lots so expensive?

Campus residents are already helping support the campus infrastructure through their room and board payments, therefore their parking permit fees are offered at a lower rate.

The designation of premium lots impacts a small portion of campus constituents. Parking planners believe that a market exists for such premium parking spaces without a negative impact on the ability for everyone to park and access campus locations.

What is a dual purpose lot?

Some apartment complex lots have been designated as dual purpose lots. As a dual purpose lot, these parking lots will be available for both apartment residents and other TU community members. TU community members employees and nonresident students) can select lot designations within the dual purpose lots in accordance with the parking lot selection system. A sufficient number of parking spaces in the dual purpose lots will be reserved for campus residents.

Where can I park if my designated lot is full?

The parking system is structured – through lot specific assignments and the increased enforcement of parking regulations – so that this should not be an issue. However, in those isolated cases, you may park in either of the Shuttle Lots (outside the Reynolds Center and north of 8th Street & Harvard Avenue). The two Shuttle Lots have been designated as open lots, meaning that all vehicles with a valid TU permit may park in these lots, except during athletic events.

While parking lot assignments cannot be guaranteed, the University will work with the campus community to provide the most convenient parking lot assignments available.

Are the lot-specific parking assignments in effect 24 hours a day? What about weekends?

The premium nonresident parking lots (Lorton, Phillips and Harwell). All residential parking lots are restricted to vehicles with permits for those lots at all times. Parking in all other nonresident lots is restricted to vehicles with permits for these lots from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and is available for open parking between 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends, beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Fridays and ending at 7 a.m. Monday mornings.

Why did my car get towed?

To ensure fairness to those who have purchased parking permits, increased enforcement of parking violations is a must. Cars that are parked in premium lots in violation of TU parking regulations will be subject to towing without warning. The issuance of the TU parking regulation book and acknowledgement of the TU parking permit receipt will serve as official notice. Towed cars may be retrieved by contacting the Security Office at 631-5555.

I sometimes need to drive a vehicle to campus that is not my primary vehicle. What do I need to do?

Your parking permit is a removable parking sticker that can be transferred between vehicles. Multiple vehicles may be registered under one permit; however, only one sticker will be assigned.

I occasionally need to drive my car across campus to attend a meeting/class in another building. Where may I park?

Persons needing to attend to business in another campus location may utilize the TU Hurricane Shuttle service. The Hurricane Shuttle service is being expanded on campus so that routes will be run more frequently with an increased number of stops across campus.

What about ADA parking?

ADA student and employee parking permits will be charged at no more than the least expensive parking permit. Vehicles with ADA permitted parking make park in any ADA assigned parking space on campus, regardless of lot restrictions.

With all the construction on campus and the removal of some parking lots, didn’t the University experience a loss in parking spaces?

There are 100 more parking spaces now than there were prior to the start of the campus construction projects in 2006. The additional spaces were gained through the creation/expansion of parking lots along 4th Street, as well as the surplus spaces located in each of the new apartment complexes.

Can’t I just park on the city streets on campus?

Within the TU campus, there are a handful of parking spots along city streets. However, because of the scarcity of these spots, you are encouraged not to rely on the availability of these spots.

What if I lose my parking permit?

If you lose your parking sticker, you will be required to purchase a new permit without any guarantee of retaining your parking lot designation. Any new parking lot assignment would be made based on the availability of spaces.

Can I borrow a friend’s permit?

No. Parking permits are only for use by the designated vehicle(s) to which it is registered. Misuse of parking permits may result in loss of campus parking privileges.

Is there a waiting list for the most desired parking lots?

Parking permits for lots with available inventory will be issued to qualifying individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. At this time, there are no plans for implementing a waiting list. The University will continuously review the parking registration process to determine future improvements, as needed.

What about permits for short courses, workshops and conferences?

The existing parking policies remain in place, and anyone planning short courses, workshops, or meetings to which persons from off campus are invited should notify the ID/Parking Center of the location of the event and make arrangements for parking. A nominal fee may apply.

Fees will be prorated throughout the year on a semester basis for those who do not require a parking permit for the full academic year.

My car is in the repair shop and I have a loaner car. What should I do?

As a convenience to current permit holders, temporary permits for unregistered vehicles are available from the ID/Parking Center at no cost. Temporary permits are issued for no more than two weeks. Temporary permits cannot be used to avoid vehicle registration.

Yes. Remove the TU parking permit from the vehicle prior to sale. Bring the remains of the sticker, your vehicle registration, and proof of sale to the ID/Parking Center to register your new vehicle with TU.
