GEOSCIENCES INFORMATION SPECIALIST- PETROLEUM ABSTRACTS

Position Summary

The selected candidate will report to the Managing Editor of Geosciences in the Scientific and Technical Analysis Group, which is in the Petroleum Abstracts Division, and will perform subject analysis tasks on assigned journals, papers and patents pertaining to the theory, equipment and procedures used in geophysics and geology for petroleum exploration and production.








Characteristic Duties

The Information Specialist, Geosciences, is primarily responsible for selecting and abstracting literature items related to geophysics. Specific duties include:
  • Reviewing assigned literature items and selecting appropriate material for inclusion in the Petroleum Abstracts Bulletin and its associated databases and search aids;
  • Performing abstracting, indexing and other content analysis functions needed to produce information products;
  • Verifying work results for geographic, scientific, and technical accuracy and completeness prior to submitting them for final editorial processing;
  • Recommending changes in the controlled geographic vocabulary;
  • Recommending new serial publications, monographs, proceedings of professional technical meetings, and other related literature to be ordered and reviewed for inclusion in the system.



    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in geophysics or related technical discipline and industry experience related to the application of geophysical and geological theory, equipment, and procedures. Knowledge of current terminology used in geophysics and geology related to petroleum exploration and production.



    Preferred Qualifications

    Practical experience in geophysics, knowledge of geology, and training in information science are highly desirable.
