10 Reasons Why TU is a Great Fit for National Merit Finalists
- You will find other National Merit Finalists among your peers. The ratio of National Merit Finalists is approximately 1 in 10 of the freshmen class. There are currently 285 Presidential Scholars enrolled. TU has one of the highest National Merit Finalists per capita in the nation.
- TU students are frequent recipients of competitive national scholarships and fellowships. TU ranks second in the nation for the most Goldwater Scholars since 2002. Since 1995, TU has been recognized with 42 Goldwaters, 26 National Science Foundation, 8 Trumans, 7 Dept. of Defense, 5 Udalls, 6 Fulbrights, 4 British Marshalls (including the first received by an Oklahoma student in 27 years), and 7 Phi Kappa Phi. These scholarships and fellowships will prepare you to be strong candidates for top graduate programs or corporate positions.
- Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge allows selected students as early as the summer before the freshman year to get involved in advanced research with faculty members as mentors. Research experience at the undergraduate level will also position you for acceptance into top graduate programs or prominent employment options.
- The student/faculty ratio of 11:1 and average class size of 19 students allow our stellar faculty to provide close mentorship to each student. The small size also offers more flexibility and enables faculty to cater toward each student's individual needs.
- TU ranks 9th in the nation for quality of life based on student surveys conducted by The Princeton Review. Select National Merit Finalists awarded the Presidential Scholarship will have their basic room and board covered for all 4 years provided they maintain a 3.25 GPA and full-time status.
- TU ranks 5th in the nation for "town gown" relations with the community based on student surveys conducted by The Princeton Review. The Presidential Scholarships offered to select National Merit Finalists include funds provided by members of the community.
- TU ranks 6th in the nation for having the happiest students in The Princeton Review! Besides strong academics, TU also has over 160 campus organizations, Division I Athletics (we won 4 Conference USA Championships last year), sororities and fraternities, internship opportunities, and much more!
- TU is the only top 100 national doctoral university in Oklahoma according to U.S. News & World Report's 2008 edition of America's Best Colleges.
- TU alumni include many distinguished individuals such as: Gordon Matthews, inventor of voice mail, ABC Correspondent Bob Brown, Producer of Harry Potter movies Mark Radcliffe, Rue McClanahan of "The Golden Girls," Gailard Sartain of "Ed Couch" and "Fried Green Tomatoes," former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver and entrepreneur Drew Pearson, and Steve Largent, former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver in the National Football Hall of Fame and United States Congressman, to name just a few.
- Lastly, you will graduate debt free or with minimal debt at a prestigious university! Select National Merit Finalists who apply and indicate TU as their school of choice will receive either the Presidential Scholarship (tuition and basic room and board for four years) or TU National Merit Scholarship (full tuition for four years). Selected students must maintain a 3.25 GPA and full-time status to keep these scholarships for four years.
