Remuneration of Undergraduate Research Assistants
The National Science Foundation has a program, called the Research Experience for Undergraduates, which allows any Principal Investigator with a National Science Foundation grant to submit a supplemental proposal and budget to add undergraduate research assistants to the program. It is obvious that we wish to encourage our students to participate in these research projects. In order to do so, it will be necessary to use the funds the NSF provides to pay reasonable compensation for the research activities performed. The work performed and the experience acquired will be very similar to the activities and expectations of a first year graduate student. These student will be selected on the basis of their academic quality rather than their financial need. Therefore, they will bear little resemblance to undergraduate work-study students in both performance expected and in the selection process. Such research activity and experience is, of course, not limited to the NSF program.
