Statement of Policy on Copyrights
The University recognizes the traditional freedom of its staff, faculty, and students in matters of publication and copyright. As a general rule, all rights to copyrightable material have belonged and shall continue to belong to the author. The reservation, collection, and distribution of royalties, if any, shall be a matter of arrangement between the author and his or her publishers or licensees. Exceptions to this rule may be made in those instances where a person may be obligated by the nature of his or her employment to produce a specific work or where commitments of a contractual nature to a specific work or where commitments of a contractual nature to a sponsor so require. In those instances, the University shall have the right to determine conditions of publication and the disposition of copyrights, all of which shall be evidenced by a written agreement between the University and the author prior to the production of the work or the publication, licensing, or use thereof.
Unless the University has employed a person for the purpose of producing a specific work, or unless commitments of a contractual nature to a sponsor require otherwise, which commitments shall be disclosed to the author in advance of commencement of the work, the author of the work shall be free to do with his or her creations as he or she wishes.
Prospective changes in this policy may be made from time to time as the Board of Trustees may deem necessary or desirable.
