The TU Safe Zone is a program that offers education, information, and resources on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning, ("GLBT") individuals. It also offers training and resources to help you learn how to better interact with those who identify as GLBT and how to be an ally to GLBT individuals.
The program's Purpose Statement is: "The TU Safe Zone program strives to create a visible support, safe haven, and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender ("GLBT") people at The University of Tulsa. The purpose of this program is to also provide resources and education to all TU community members who choose to seek it out and offer opportunties to learn how to better support and serve the TU GLBT community."
The Safe Zone Workshop is approximately 4 hours long and is an interactive and discussion based program. At the end of the program, you will be able to decide whether you would like to join the TU Safe Zone community as an ally.
Attendance at the TU Safe Zone workshop is open to all TU faculty, staff, and students who are interested in learning more about GLBT issues and Ally characteristics. Members of the GLBT community are also invited to attend. Membership in the Safe Zone program is open to all TU faculty, staff, and students who are willing to provide a safe and supportive environment for GLBT individuals. This program is strictly voluntary and should never be used as a required sanction or training for any individual. It is important that all TU Allies have voluntarily particpated and completed training. While successful completion of the Ally training is necessary to become a "TU Ally" indiviuals may attend the course solely to learn more about GLBT issues and Ally characteristics. It is not required that you hang the Safe Zone placard after completion of the course.
You will receive helpful resources, including the extensive informational binder, handouts for visitors, monthly newsletters, and access to a Safe Zone listserve for continuted questions and support.
