Last night, I had the pleasure of visiting with two of our TU Law students at a reception. The 2L has secured a competitive externship placement this summer and told the 1L she could do the same.
The 1L was hesitant about her ability to do so. The 2L gave her great advice: As long as you are sincere about your career intentions and work hard, you will find what you are seeking, but you must always have your game face on!
One of my favorite public service announcements is produced by the NCAA highlighting how student-athletes are “going pro in something other than sports.” I recently watched this commercial during a TU basketball game, and I realized that it has some applicability to law school.
I’m not going to lie. I really enjoy watching sports a lot more when I have something invested in the game. Obviously, when you’re playing the game, it’s riding on your ultimate investment of blood, sweat, and tears. As a spectator, when your favorite team is on the field (like the Superbowl Champ New York GIANTS!), you have an emotional investment in the game. If you’re a hardcore fan, a playoff loss feels like there’s been a death in your family.
