During my one externship, I interviewed more than 200 clients, worked closely on their cases, wrote motions, and helped negotiate plea deals with the DA’s office. Also, because I obtained my Legal Intern License, I was able to represent more than 30 clients in court proceedings.
How did the experience help prepare you for the professional world?
I was able to gain more courtroom experience than most 2nd year Associates.
What advice or further information would you give a student who is considering an externship?
If possible take the test and receive your LLI, so that you can take advantage of the opportunities to practice law under supervision while in your externship. Also, make certain that you are learning and not just working. Ask for projects that force you to learn parts of the law that are new to you.
Is there anything else you would want others to know about your externship experience?
The Public Defender’s Office is a great place to learn about criminal procedure, courtroom etiquette and litigation. These are very valuable commodities in the workplace and really cannot be obtained in the classroom.
