Sally Meyers

Class of 2011

University of Tulsa economics major Sally Meyers has been named a 2010 Truman Scholar, the premiere award for those pursuing graduate studies and careers in public service. The Truman Scholarship will provide up to $30,000 to help Meyers further her goals of earning her PhD in economics and using it to aid development efforts in Latin American countries.

The prestigious Truman Scholarship Foundation awarded 60 scholarships this year and chose Meyers based on her leadership potential, intellectual ability and likelihood of making a difference. Meyers competed against students from Stanford, Harvard, Baylor, New York University, Iowa University, Kansas State University, Seton Hall and the University of Florida.

“I’m really honored and appreciative of the support of the TU people who have helped make this possible,” Meyers said. She was notified of her award March 30 with a surprise visit during her economics class by university officials, professors and mentors.

A junior from Springfield, Missouri, Meyers is a National Merit Finalist and the recipient of the TU Presidential Scholarship, the university’s most prestigious student award. But her experience outside the classroom has truly set her apart.

After high school, Meyers spent a year in AmeriCorps working for the Salvation Army in Wilmington, Delaware, living apart from family and friends in another city and working with urban dwellers deeply entrenched in poverty.

“Her commitment is to making life better for the less advantaged,” said Steve Steib, professor and chair of the Department of Economics and Meyers’ faculty advisor. “This young lady is determined to make a difference and she will.”

After completing her economics degree at TU in 2011, Meyers plans to earn her doctoral degree in economics from an interdisciplinary program like the one at the University of Michigan and work in developing countries, specifically Latin America.

Meyers is the ninth TU student to be honored as a Truman Scholar. In September 2005, The University of Tulsa was designated a Truman Honor Institution by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. The Truman designation recognizes institutions that actively encourage students to pursue careers in public service.
